  “Better Being called the build-up of mind and disposition for Taijiquan ,Rather than the Exercise of Limbs and trunk”

     “Better Being called the build-up of mind and disposition for Taijiquan , Rather than the exercise of Limbs and trunk”,this was spoken by master wang pei sheng ,famous expert of wu stye taijiquan , when was interviewed by the correspondent of the English news-paper ,China daily in the middle of 1980's , The experience of master wang has laid bare the quintessence of the exercise gist of the taijiquan ,one of the connotative shedow boxings ,with one remark . The book “on Taijiquan”says:“Mind is omnipresent”. “The song of 13 postures”says:“Every posture should be kept in mind for intention”.that is to say that the consciousness problem is the prime problem of Taijiquan .Different types of Taijiquan are all wishout exception for emphasizing the priority of mind and the importance of the existance of consoiousness .There are four main points in the Taijquan system:the oonoentration of mind , accumulation of breath ,collection of attention and firmness of strength .The“concentration of mind is the prime one of the four main pointe .The gist of the Taijiquan movements is to move breath by mind and to move body by breath”.In conorese words ,it is“to move consciousness by mind ,to keep breath by consciousness and to driect strensth by breath ”.There for ,“to move breath by mind “is by no means to put forth breath deliberately ,but to move intention .”when intention moves ,breath follows ”.In other words ,while keeping thought in mind ,intention takes the lead and breath follows .where there is intention ,there is breath .where there goes breath .there follows strength .this is where the root of the in ternel exercise gist of Taijiquan exists . Intention starts, internal movement follows and then body movement ,this is the internal movement taking lead of body movement and body movement joining .in the internal movement , i.e.from the internal to the external with the combination of the internal and the external . This is the important characteristics of the Taijiquan movement law .By the internal it denotes the will and spirit, while by the external it denotes flesh and blood (body), i.e.the change of body postures and the bending and stretching of the four limbs .In the feudel society, the monarch reigned supreme while officials were at his beck and call .“Heart takes the lead and body follows suit”,“Will and spirit are monarch while flesh and blood are officiels.”This is the example of the relationship of principle and subordinate between the monarch and the officials to emphasize that the latter should take the orders from the former. Moreover, not only there must be difference between the principle and the subordinate, and between the early and the late for the internal will and spirit and the external parte of the body, but both must be in concert and harmony and close-knit .The result shows that when one move starts ,all follow suit ,while it stops ,all follow suit ,with the whole body being all in one and close-knit .when it comes to the practical exercises ,it demands first and foremost to banish all distracting thoughts from one's mind .Before the move starts ,one should use the psychological process of the sensory thought to think over gist of the movements ,method and the track of movements . After the forward move starts ,you should consider the begining ,developing and ending of the next move in accordance with the mind movement .Thus ,it goes on cyclically until the last posture .Here it all shows that all moves of Taijiquan go on under the leading of consciousness , i.e.mind moves and body follows suit ,with the combinstion of mind and body just like the autumn wind sweeping fallen leaves .In the middle of 1980's , master wang peiseng made an easy to understand example for . “to move breath by mind and to move body by breath”and “Will and spirit are monarch while flesh and blood are officials”.He said: “The external body posture is like a young man ,while the internal breath and mind is like an old man .The young man should take care of the old man ,not act on his own wilfully .He should be at old man's beck and call constantly ,not mixing up any thinking of meaning of his own .when the old man wants to go eastward ,he should follow suit .when the former goes to the west ,the latter has do the same .when the former wants a slow move ,the latter should follow closely . when the former wants a fast motion ,the latter has to follow exactly .It applies the same to all moves ,big or small ”.It is exactly because the characteristics of Taijiquan exercise are from rest to motion ,form the internal to the external totally through the efforts of mind ,all moves to be at the beck and call of mind ,no wanton move ,no use of clumsy strength ,all of which are the most important principles .There for ,some people humorously call Taijiquan exercise as “consciousness exercise”.
